I have come to worry about the state and direction of this community we call MySpace. It has garnered of late, a reputation as a haven for lechers, paedophiles, deviants. I know that this was never the purpose of this corner of the web, bnut at the same time, it was never the purpose of the web as a whole. Having been on the web since it’s earliest days, chatting via ‘Talk’ and ICB in ‘90 and ‘91, I remember when the whole of the web held the same ideals as MySpace tries to hold today, those idelas being a common ground, a meeting place for people from every stara of society, where rich and poor could meet as equals, where economic limitations were invisible, where race mattered less than intellect, where people were responsible to treat the awful power of unfettered communication with respect and dignity.
Well, those halcyon days are gone, there has been much, and will be much more National press regarding the fact that people too young to be running the streets are running the cyber-streets, where those not yet mature enough to know any better are placing themselves in harm’s way, and where the deviant segment of our society is finding a fertile hunting ground.
1.) I am an adult, I HAVE kids, if you are underage, or are young enough not to have any business hanging around grown folks, then please remove me as your friend, When i look at profiles, I look to see the age posted, if that age was misrepresented, I do not wish to know you., maybe you can be friends with one of my kids.
2.) If you ARE of young age, or have children out here, do not play. keep to your own age group, preferrably to people you already know and can verify, there will always be perverts pretending to be something they are not. Do not EVER provide information that could be used to identify you in real life, and, take as a personal lesson, do not get into cyber-fights, you will eventually come up against someone who will put your life, or a photoshopped version thereof, out there to hurt and damage you.
Furthermore, If you read this and feel the same way I do, please pass the intention, spirit and heart of this missive along. Protect our kids from themselves, and protect our community from the darker elements within it.
